Orlando Heading For Tampa
Orlando Hernandez is back in the fold.
The AP has the best writeup of the deal: One year, $500,000, contingent on physical (link to AP story via ESPN.)
The $500,000 is the guaranteed portion of the contract. Bonuses include:
$3,000 per day on the active roster
$45,000 per start
$12,500 per relief appearance
Let's work that out for a moment. The most profitable situation for Hernandez would clearly be a full season on the active roster, taking his turn in the rotation. This would involve Lieber's arm falling off or something.
That'd come out to $1,440,000 in per start money (assuming 32 starts). The Yankees' season lasts from March 30th through October 3rd - 187 days by my quick count. That's another $561,000 or so. Now, Hernanez would have to have a healthy and productive season to get anywhere near that much mound-time (especially since the Yankees are buying these starts a la carte). If El Duque has the best year of his career, he'll make slightly over $2 million.
Late edit: I really should have some coffee before I post. Hernandez won't be ready until May, or so. The Daily News story (which I actually saw this morning) has him at least a month away. Over at Bronx Banter, Alex Belth links to a New York Newsday column which quotes Billy Connors saying Hernandez will need two months to be ready.

A note on the New York papers: First of all, excluding the Times, you've got Newsday, Daily News, Post, in order from pretty OK to sub-fishwrap. Today I'll pick on the Daily News for just a second. Specifically, this John "Cowher-chin" Harper story about Zimmer and Steinbrenner walking past one another.
"He walked out, I walked in - end of story," Zimmer was saying yesterday, as emphatically as ever.
The column goes on for 22 paragraphs after that. Enough said.

Turns out I probably won't see much of today's game after all. If I see some, I'll be back with my impressions. If not, I dunno, I'll make something up or make fun of Trot Nixon or something.
